Alakai Swamp Boardwalk Being Repaired

One of Kauai’s most beautiful trails is getting an upgrade! Crews with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) are replacing deteriorated and rotted boardwalk on three miles of the Alakai Swamp Trail with new structural plastic lumber that is expected to be more durable. The boardwalk provides an elevated pathway through the swamp. In recent years, the wooden boardwalk, topped with chicken wire for traction, has deteriorated, leaving gaps in the trail. The $500,000 project was made possible by capital improvement funding allocated in 2014.
