Bird Encounter at Moloa’a Bay

Bird Encounter at Moloa’a Bay

While hiking along the Moloa’a Bay Ranch Coastal Trail, we veered off the path and up a hill. What we found were two Wedge-tailed Sheerwater (Ua’u Kane) birds nesting. Though we didn’t get too close, apparently the birds were a “husband and wife” (the birds are monogamous) taking turns incubating a single egg. The incubation period takes about 50 days.

Kauai is a premier destination for birdwatchers. Of note is the nearby Kilauea Lighthouse (part of the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge), a landmark that draws a wide variety of birds to the sanctuary.
