A gate with padlock has been installed at the entrance to Queen’s Bath in Princeville, Kauai. The sign on the gate says NO TRESPASSING WHEN LOCKED DUE TO DANGEROUS CONDITIONS and warns VIOLATORS MAY BE CITED, PROSECUTED AND CHARGED FOR RESCUE OR RECOVERY EXPENSES.
We visited the entrance twice during the third week of September 2018, and the gate was locked both times. Ocean conditions during these times were calm. A good argument could be made that Queen’s Bath is dangerous at all times, meaning the gate could stay locked indefinitely.
But that hasn’t stopped a steady stream of people from proceeding on to Queen’s Bath. The fence only extends another three posts past the locked gate, and we witnessed a number of people simply going around the fence. The locked gate and sign stopped no one that we saw.
The Princeville Community Association has been tasked with the County of Kauai with managing the gate, and there are discussions underway to extend the fence. (However, as the Wailua Falls fence has proven, people will likely find a way through.)
Many people who stay in Princeville simply walk to Queen’s Bath to avoid the parking situation.
Visitors only have to walk a short distance to the end of the fence to gain access to Queen’s Bath.
