The old Hanalei Plantation location is one of the most desirable properties in all of Kauai. Situated on a stunning ridge overlooking Hanalei Bay, and above Puu Poa Beach and the Hanalei River, this property is in the middle of a fight between Hanalei preservationists and the Ohana Real Estate Company. Ohana Real Estate Investors LLC is seeking to develop the property, including building a “village-like” hotel overlooking a revitalized ancient fish pond behind Puu Poa Beach, and residences on the ridge above. The property has been developed before, including a Club Med several years ago, however the impact of the proposed project is grander and reaches to the edge of the St. Regis Princeville Resort. On the Hanalei River/Black Pot Beach side, there are concerns that structures (homes) would spoil the beauty of the area as happened in Nawiliwili Harbor near Lihue, Kauai. Due to local opposition, including 6,000 signatures against the development, the Ohana Real Estate Company has hired the Discovery Land Company (in February 2015) to reevaluate the project, though locals remain wary of their involvement. The real estate company maintains a website with details of their proposed master plan. Take a look and tell us what you think about the project. (At first glance, in our opinion, we would hate to see the trees removed that provide shade for Puu Poa Beach.)
