Kauai Visitor Dies at Hanalei Bay

A 67-year-old male visitor died on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 in waters off Hanalei Beach in an attempt to assist two swimmers in distress, reports the County of Kauai. He has been identified as Janusz Jakubowicz of Poland.

According to a preliminary report, at approximately 5:15 p.m., first responders received a call of distressed swimmers in waters west of the Hanalei Pavilion lifeguard tower. In an attempt to assist the two swimmers, Jakubowicz became distressed. The two swimmers made it safely to shore. However, Jakubowicz became unresponsive in the water and was brought to shore by local surfers. On shore, first responders administered CPR. American Medical Response (AMR) personnel continued advanced life-saving treatment on Jakubowicz while in transport to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital, but he could not be revived.

An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
