Overnight camping at Kauai’s Polihale Beach will reopen for stays beginning August 14, 2022, reports the Hawaii Division of State Parks. Reservations will be available online starting August 1st. Applicants are encouraged to make their reservations via the park’s online portal.
The remote beach, right around the corner from the island’s famed Na Pali Coast, is reached via a 5-mile-long unimproved dirt road. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended, though many if not most rental car companies prohibit the use of their vehicles on this road. Visitors who do navigate the rough road are rewarded with a 10-mile-long expansive beach backed by sand dunes and cliffs.
It’s best to stay on the beach and out of the water at Polihale. Powerful waves and strong currents make the beach a dangerous place. Instead, enjoy Polihale’s large expanse of sand, spectacular views of the ocean in front, and dramatic cliffs as a backdrop. At night, enjoy a dark sky lit up with thousands of stars, the Milky Way, and the occasional meteor.
