Smith’s Family Garden Luau
The Smith’s Family Garden Luau in Kauai (at Smith’s Tropical Paradise) is a wholesome, family-oriented, large scale production that has approximately 500 people in attendance. This isn’t your quaint, dancers in your face, fire by the ocean luau you may have seen on TV. Nevertheless, the luau is entertaining and a nice experience. Just know that you’ll be dining along with about 500 other people on rows of tables in an open-air building before moving to an amphitheater for the evening’s entertainment.
It’s obvious from the time you arrive that the Smith family has been doing this for years, and they have it down to a science. First, a tram takes visitors from the entrance on a tour of the beautiful grounds that includes a central lake and a host of tropical plants. Next up is the feast, starting with a ceremonial unearthing of the Kalua pig that has been roasted in an imu oven. After that, it’s off to the buffet-style meal. Visitors are expertly guided in groups through this experience. During the latter part of the meal there is some family-oriented entertainment on the stage.
After dinner, it’s time to walk to the amphitheater for the musical and dancing portion of the evening. The “Rhythm of Aloha” show features authentic performances from the Hawaiian Islands as well as from the Western and South Pacific. This part is well choreographed, with lighting, fire, a volcano, dancers and other performers. After it’s all over, the tram deposits visitors back in the parking lot. Overall, it’s a wonderful evening filled with fine food, live entertainment and Hawaiian culture.
Combine the luau with a 3:30PM Fern Grotto Tour on the Wailua River for more fun and enjoyment.
The luau is centrally located between Kapaa and Lihue near the Wailua River. Tickets are $125 for adults, $35 for ages 7-13, and $25 for ages 3-6.
