Puu o Kila Lookout

Puu o Kila Lookout

The Puu o Kila Lookout perhaps has an even better view of the Kalalau Valley and the Na Pali Coast than the more famous nearby Kalalau Lookout. From this lookout, you get a view looking down the center of the valley. Be careful as you look over the edge as the lookout can be very muddy and slippery. There are several picnic benches at the overlook.

The overlook is located at the end of Kokee Road (Highway 550) at Mile Marker 19 about a mile past the Kalalau Lookout. Please note this lookout is sometimes closed due to inclement weather and that clouds can sometimes obscure the view.

Going early, before noon, is said to increase the chances of seeing the valley without clouds though no time is guaranteed. The Pihea Trail begins at the lookout with additional views of the Kalalau Valley.

Many visitors to the Puu o Kila Lookout do an impromptu hike down the first part of the wide and red Pihea Trail. The trail is often wet and slippery so watch your step.

For a more involved hike, the Pihea Trail turns into the Alakai Swamp Trail, ultimately ending at the jaw-dropping Kilohana Lookout.
