Hanalei Pier

Hanalei Pier

One of the most beautiful spots in the world can be taken in from the Hanalei Pier on the North Shore of Kauai. Located in the surf town of Hanalei at Black Pot Beach Park, the renovated pier offers gorgeous 360 degree views of Hanalei Bay and the surrounding tropical mountains. The pier is one of the top attractions on the island of Kauai and also one of the most photographed. Be sure to visit at sunset for the most gorgeous views of them all.

The pier is a focal point of Kauai’s North Shore community, serving as a gathering place for families, fishermen, artists, surfers, children (who delight in jumping off the pier) and awestruck tourists. Each evening, local residents and tourists alike flock to the pier for Hanalei Bay’s legendary sunsets.

History of the Hanalei Pier

Hanalei Pier History

The pier, built by 1892 of wood, was originally used to ship rice to Honolulu and beyond. In the early 1900s the pier was extended to a length of 340 feet. A concrete deck was added in 1922 to replace the wood deck which was problematic in the wet tropical climate.

A roof at the end of the pier was added in the 1940s. The pier was heavily damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992. The Hanalei Rotary Club raised over $170,000 in a “Save the Pier” campaign and the pier was restored to its present state in 2013.

Severe flooding in April 2018 damaged the beach and the surrounding area at the Hanalei Pier, resulting in months-long closures of the pier and Black Pot Beach Park. The area was largely restored by the summer of 2019.

The flooding resulted in a sandbar and a new channel of water underneath the pier, the destruction of facilities at Black Pot Beach Park and the damage of several houses adjacent to the pier (photos below).

The sandbar was dredged after the flooding, with the sand being used to reconstruct portions of the beach and to add height to the reconstructed Weke Road. The area is now fully repaired, with the channel filled in, the damaged houses removed and Black Pot Beach Park restored.
